EU Retaliates with Tariffs on U.S. After Trump Imposes Aluminum and Steel Duties

Brussels targets U.S. goods as Trump fights back against unfair trade practices.

The European Union (EU) is once again lashing out at America’s economic independence, announcing $28 billion in retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods after President Donald Trump imposed new duties on imported steel and aluminum. This latest move by Brussels is nothing more than an attempt to punish America for standing up to years of unfair trade practices that have cost American workers and industries dearly.

On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the EU will reintroduce tariffs that were first used against the U.S. during Trump’s first term while adding new ones aimed at states that overwhelmingly vote Republican.

“As of this morning, the United States is applying a 25% tariff on imports of steel and aluminum. We deeply regret this measure,” von der Leyen stated, calling tariffs “bad for business” and warning that they will drive up prices.

But what von der Leyen conveniently ignored is the fact that the EU has been cheating the U.S. on trade for years by blocking American cars, slapping high tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods, and maintaining protectionist policies that benefit European industries while undermining American businesses.

The EU’s move exposes the deep hypocrisy of European leadership:

  • The EU heavily subsidizes its own industries while demanding “free trade” from the U.S.

  • European nations impose tariffs on U.S. products while crying foul when America fights back.

  • Brussels has long used regulatory red tape to keep American businesses out while favoring their own.

President Trump made it clear last month that he’s not going to let the EU continue to rip off the United States.

“They’ve really taken advantage of us,” Trump said in February. “They don’t accept our cars, they don’t accept, essentially, our farm products… The European Union was formed in order to screw the United States… but now I’m president.”

Trump’s latest tariffs are a direct response to the EU’s refusal to engage in fair trade. By placing a 25% duty on steel and aluminum imports, Trump is making it clear that the era of Europe profiting off America’s economy is over.

The EU claims it’s “open to negotiation,” but history shows that it only plays fair when it’s forced to. Trump’s tough stance brought China to the negotiating table, forced Mexico and Canada to agree to a better trade deal, and now, it’s Europe’s turn to play by the rules.

President Trump is doing what no other modern president has dared to do stand up to the EU’s unfair trade policies and put American workers first. The EU can cry foul all it wants, but the days of taking advantage of the United States are over.
