Elon Musk Calls for Major Overhaul of Federal Government at Trump Rally

Musk outlines bold plans to cut waste and reform Washington under Trump’s leadership.

Elon Musk took the stage Sunday at a Washington, D.C., rally celebrating President-elect Donald Trump’s victory, urging the nation to seize this pivotal moment to implement sweeping changes in the federal government. Addressing thousands of enthusiastic supporters at Capital One Arena, Musk emphasized the importance of reforms that would secure America’s strength for centuries.

“We’re looking forward to making a lot of changes, and this victory is the start,” Musk said. “What matters going forward is to actually make significant changes, cement those changes, and set the foundation for America to be strong for a century, for centuries, forever.”

Musk, a vocal supporter of Trump during the 2024 campaign, has been tasked with leading the newly announced Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The initiative, created to slash government waste and streamline operations, aims to make transformative cuts to the federal budget and bureaucracy.

“I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump said in a statement.

The president-elect highlighted the department’s goals, including:

  • Cutting $2 trillion from the federal budget annually.

  • Eliminating redundant or burdensome regulations that stifle economic growth.

  • Partnering with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget to drive structural reforms.

“This entrepreneurial approach to government has never been seen before,” Trump said, describing DOGE’s mission to dismantle inefficiencies and reduce the federal government's sprawling footprint.

While Vivek Ramaswamy was initially announced as Musk’s partner in leading DOGE, reports indicate that he may step away to focus on a potential gubernatorial run in Ohio. Should Ramaswamy depart, Musk is expected to remain at the helm, driving the initiative with his characteristic determination and focus.

The rally included appearances by UFC President Dana White, actor Jon Voight, and former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, each offering their support for Trump’s return to the White House. Musk brought his 4-year-old son X on stage, describing him as “a very enthusiastic supporter” of the president-elect.

As Trump prepares to take the oath of office on Monday, frigid temperatures in D.C. have prompted the inauguration ceremony to move indoors to the Capitol. While the traditional parade has been canceled, Trump is expected to sign a series of executive orders from a stage set up in the arena, signaling the start of his aggressive agenda.

Musk’s leadership of DOGE marks a significant moment in the Trump administration’s “Save America” movement. With the goal of cutting $2 trillion in annual waste and unleashing the American economy from overregulation, Musk’s vision represents a dramatic shift in how the government operates.

The road ahead will not be without challenges, but as Musk told the crowd, “Now is the time to make these significant changes.”
