Elon Musk to Fund Murals Honoring Murdered Ukrainian Refugee With $1M Donation
Tech leaders break silence as brutal killing exposes failures of soft-on-crime policies and media hypocrisy.

The murder of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee brutally stabbed to death on a Charlotte train, has struck a nerve across the country and now, tech billionaire Elon Musk is stepping up where the political class and legacy media have failed.
Musk pledged $1 million to support the creation of murals honoring Zarutska in prominent U.S. cities, joining Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe, who launched the initiative with a $500,000 commitment.
“I am offering $500k in $10k grants to paint murals of the face of Iryna Zarutska in prominent US city locations,” McCabe wrote. Musk replied: “I’ll contribute $1M.”
The murals aim to keep Zarutska’s name and face in public view a stark contrast to the eerie silence from the corporate press, which has largely ignored the story outside of conservative circles.
Zarutska fled war-torn Ukraine in 2022 seeking peace and safety. Instead, she was murdered on a Charlotte light rail train by a man with a rap sheet a mile long: Decarlos Brown Jr., who had been arrested 14 times, yet remained free thanks to lax prosecution and Democrat-led soft-on-crime policies.
Here’s what we know:
Brown had 14 prior arrests, including armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.
He was released under a cashless bail system, despite violent tendencies.
Surveillance footage shows him stabbing Zarutska multiple times, including in the neck, before casually walking off the train.
Zarutska, who was working at a local pizzeria, was in her uniform at the time of the attack. She was described by friends and coworkers as kind, hardworking, and hopeful about building a life in America.
“This could have been anyone riding the light rail that night,” her grieving family said in their first public statement. “We are committed to making sure this never happens again.”
While the Department of Justice has charged Brown with first-degree murder and committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system (a federal charge that opens the door to the death penalty), many are asking. Why was this man walking free in the first place?
President Donald Trump weighed in forcefully after viewing the graphic footage:
“The perpetrator was a well-known career criminal… What the hell was he doing riding the train, and walking the streets? Criminals like this need to be LOCKED UP,” Trump said.
This brutal murder has become a national flashpoint, not just for discussions about crime, but also about media double standards. After the killing of George Floyd in 2020, murals were painted in cities nationwide, statues erected, and media coverage was wall-to-wall.
Now, a young immigrant woman murdered in cold blood by a repeat offender gets a shrug from the same media that once demanded justice for every viral tragedy.
“We want to make sure she’s not forgotten,” said a person helping organize the mural campaign, speaking anonymously to Fox News Digital. “The silence around her death says a lot about the failures of leftist policies and the media’s priorities.”
More than 1,000 artists are reportedly being contacted to participate in the mural project, with poster campaigns planned as well. Cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are being considered for the installations.
Elon Musk, one of the few high-profile leaders willing to speak against the establishment narrative, has now turned his outrage into action while the White House and mainstream media remain utterly silent.
This isn’t just a tribute. It’s a challenge.
A challenge to remember that real victims deserve real justice, no matter how inconvenient the story is for the ruling class.
