Ellen DeGeneres Admits She Moved To UK Because Of Trump’s Re-Election

The former talk show host praises life in Britain while taking a swipe at America under Trump.

Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres confirmed over the weekend that the re-election of President Donald Trump played a key role in her decision to leave the United States and settle in the United Kingdom. Speaking at a live event in Cheltenham with British broadcaster Richard Bacon, the 67-year-old comedian admitted the rumors were true.

“Yes,” DeGeneres said when asked if the election results prompted her move. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”

DeGeneres gushed about her new life in Britain, describing it as a stark contrast to what she sees in America. “It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said. “The villages and the towns and the architecture everything you see is charming, and it’s just a simpler way of life. It’s clean. Everything here is just better … the way animals are treated, people are polite. I just love it here.”

The former TV host noted that she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, relocated in November and quickly embraced rural life, even flying in Portia’s horses and acquiring chickens. “We love it here,” DeGeneres said. “We had sheep for about two weeks.”

Other highlights from DeGeneres’ talk included:

  • Admitting that being openly gay in Hollywood remains “still a problem” and that “people are still scared” to come out.

  • Reflecting on her “mean” reputation following accusations of a toxic work environment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying, “I don’t think I can say anything that’s ever going to get rid of that [reputation] or dispel it, which is hurtful to me.”

  • Hinting at the possibility of starting a British talk show, though she said she’s unsure what’s next: “I do like my chickens but I’m a little bit bored.”

DeGeneres’ move overseas and her swipe at Trump’s America is being met with mixed reactions. While some of her fans celebrated her decision to start fresh, critics see her remarks as out of touch, especially when millions of Americans are fighting to rebuild the country under Trump’s second term.
