Press Sec. Faces Tough Questions from Doocy on Harris' Handling of Border Crisis
Tensions flare as Peter Doocy questions Harris's role and administration's handling of border issues.
Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy took aim at Vice President Kamala Harris and her handling of the southern border crisis during a fiery exchange with Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The confrontation followed a flurry of media attempts to distance Harris from the ongoing disaster at the U.S.-Mexico border. Several outlets even revisited their coverage of President Joe Biden’s decision to name her the Border Czar, attempting to downplay her role.
Doocy began by presenting a card reportedly circulated among Democrats on Capitol Hill, which outlines new talking points on Harris's involvement with the border crisis. “Democrats on Capitol Hill are being handed this card with talking points about the Vice President and the border. Do you know who’s handing this out?” Doocy asked.
“I have no idea,” Jean-Pierre responded, suggesting, “You probably should ask her campaign.”
Doocy pressed further: “The first one says, ‘Vice President Harris was never appointed border czar. There’s never been such a position. It doesn’t exist.’ Why are Democrats so sensitive about the Vice President and the border?”
Jean-Pierre attempted to deflect, criticizing Republicans for the failure of bipartisan border legislation. “Why are Republicans so sensitive about actually not owning up to them getting in the way of a border deal?” she asked, laying blame on former President Donald Trump.
Doocy countered by pointing out that Harris had been tasked with addressing the “root causes” of migration. “Do you think that the border would be less of a talking point now if there was less migration to the border, say, if somebody had addressed root causes of migration sooner?”
Jean-Pierre claimed that all progress at the border had been due to President Biden and Vice President Harris, neglecting to mention that some improvements were achieved by quietly reimplementing policies from the previous administration. “They — he moved forward and took actions to deal with what’s going on at the border. Republicans continue to block getting resources to the Border Patrol agents. They continue to block actually dealing with an immigration system.”
Despite her insistence that Harris was never a border czar and citing independent fact-checkers to support this claim, the administration's struggle with border policy remains evident. The situation at the border continues to be a contentious issue, with critics pointing to the administration's inconsistent messaging and lack of effective solutions.
