DNC Adds Third Layer of Fencing After Protesters Breach Security

Security concerns escalated at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago after protesters breached the outer security perimeter on Monday. In response, crews installed a third layer of fencing around the United Center early Tuesday morning to prevent further breaches, according to reports from CNN and video footage published by Forbes.

The protests, primarily driven by objections to the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, have intensified since the convention began. Demonstrators managed to tear down sections of the outer barrier on the first day, though they were stopped by a second line of fencing before reaching the convention center.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that 13 arrests were made on Monday, with charges ranging from criminal trespassing to aggravated battery of police officers. Snelling noted that discussions with the Secret Service led to the "fortification" of the area to prevent any repeat incidents.

Despite the security breach, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson downplayed the event, denying any "operational failure" and dismissing the need for additional police presence. Johnson defended the city's actions, stating, "Protecting the First Amendment right. That’s what we’ve done."

The heightened tensions surrounding the DNC were further amplified by President Joe Biden’s off-script remarks during his speech on Monday. Acknowledging the protesters, Biden admitted, "Those protesters out in the street. They have a point," referring to the significant loss of life on both sides of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The protests and the subsequent security breach underscore the growing dissatisfaction among some factions of the Democratic base with the current administration’s foreign policy. As the DNC continues, the added security measures reflect a heightened awareness of the potential for further unrest.
