DeSantis Orders State Investigation Into Trump Assassination Attempt

Governor launches Florida investigation, citing transparency concerns over federal involvement.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order on Tuesday authorizing a state-led investigation into the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The probe, led by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, comes after authorities arrested a Democrat donor with a lengthy criminal record found near Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course, armed with a rifle.

The suspect, who owned a truck displaying a Biden-Harris bumper sticker, had also written a book urging Iran to assassinate Trump, according to reports. The man, who was only a few hundred yards away from the former president, was quickly detained, but the attempted attack has raised significant security concerns.

“The State of Florida is conducting its own investigation into the second attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump,” DeSantis announced. He stressed that it is inappropriate for the same federal agencies that are prosecuting Trump on other charges to also handle the investigation into this attempt on his life. “It is not in the best interests of our state and nation to have the same federal agencies seeking to prosecute Trump leading this investigation.”

DeSantis emphasized that the state has jurisdiction over the most serious charge: attempted murder. Florida's probe, he explained, will move forward with full transparency and will prioritize public accountability. "There will be accountability in Florida. The people of our state, and the entire country, deserve no less," he declared.

The governor took a swipe at federal agencies, suggesting that a state-run investigation would avoid the secrecy that has plagued many federal probes. “What the state does is going to be made public,” DeSantis said, referring to Florida's sunshine laws, which allow much of the investigation’s details to be disclosed to the public.

This level of transparency, DeSantis believes, will ensure that the truth is not kept hidden. He expressed his determination to keep Floridians and Americans informed, stating, "I want the information to get out. I do not want any of the information kept under wraps."

As the investigation progresses, DeSantis’ decision to take control of the probe will undoubtedly spark further debate over the role of federal agencies and the influence of politics in these critical matters. With Trump continuing to face threats to his life amid a contentious 2024 election cycle, the governor’s move reflects a growing demand for state-led accountability in the face of increasing political violence.
