DeSantis Appoints Chief of Staff as Florida’s New Attorney General
James Uthmeier is set to succeed Ashley Moody in the role as DeSantis strengthens Florida’s leadership.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced that his chief of staff, James Uthmeier, will serve as the state’s next attorney general, a move reflecting DeSantis’ commitment to reinforcing conservative leadership in Florida.
The announcement follows DeSantis’ decision to appoint current Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Senator Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate. Rubio has been nominated to serve as Secretary of State in the upcoming Trump administration.
“My Chief of Staff, James Uthmeier, is kind of like Ashley. He’s proven himself in these fights,” DeSantis said during remarks in Orlando. “I think he’s got big shoes to fill, but I think he’ll do a good job doing that.”
Uthmeier expressed gratitude for the opportunity, taking to social media to share his enthusiasm for the new role.
“I’m honored and humbled to be appointed by @GovRonDeSantis as the next Attorney General of the Free State of Florida,” he wrote on X. “I’m excited to get to work, build on @AGAshleyMoody’s fine record, help enact the @realDonaldTrump agenda, and defend our people, our constitution, and our Florida way of life!”
Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez also praised the decision, emphasizing Uthmeier’s readiness to defend the state and uphold the rule of law.
“Floridians can count on you to protect our state, defend the rule of law, and uphold the Florida Constitution,” Nuñez remarked.
Uthmeier will officially assume the position after Rubio’s confirmation as Secretary of State. Until then, he will prepare to take over a role that has been integral in solidifying Florida’s standing as a leader in conservative governance.
Ashley Moody has been a strong advocate for Florida’s values, frequently taking on federal overreach and defending state laws. Uthmeier has signaled his intent to continue Moody’s legacy while aligning with DeSantis’ vision and the broader agenda of the incoming Trump administration.
The appointment underscores DeSantis’ ongoing efforts to fortify Florida’s leadership with individuals committed to defending constitutional principles and prioritizing the interests of Floridians.
