DeSantis Enacts Statewide Ban on Water Fluoridation in Florida

Governor slams “forced medication,” says fluoride mandate echoes COVID-era government overreach.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis just took another major stand for medical freedom, signing legislation that bans the addition of fluoride to Florida’s public water supply, effective July 1. The move makes Florida the second state in the nation, after Utah, to reject what DeSantis called “forced medication.”

“Yes, use fluoride for your teeth, that’s fine,” DeSantis said at the bill signing. “But forcing it into the water supply is basically forced medication on people. They don’t have a choice; you’re taking that away from them.”

The new law SB 700 prohibits the use of any additive in a water system that doesn’t meet rigorous new standards, with a direct focus on removing fluoride from municipal systems. The decision has ignited debate not only about fluoride, but about the larger issue of government overreach in health policy.

For DeSantis, the move is consistent with his battle-tested track record of standing against the medical elite, especially during the COVID pandemic.

“They had certain views: you should wear a mask when you’re outside in 95-degree temperatures no, thank you,” DeSantis said. “That kids should get a COVID mRNA shot even though we still don’t have data to justify it.”

“Some of these people think they know better for you than you do for yourself,” he continued. “Because they have medical training or they work in government, they believe they can decree how we live our lives.”

DeSantis also pointed out that fluoride is widely available through toothpaste and other dental products, making the need to put it in the public water supply completely outdated and, in his words, unjustified.

“You don’t get to force it and take away people’s choices,” DeSantis said. “The whole crux of the issue is you should be able to make decisions on the basis of informed consent.”

DeSantis’s critics are already launching the usual hysteria, warning of dental disasters and public health crises. But no one’s banning fluoride Floridians can still use it if they want. What’s being banned is the government’s ability to force-medicate entire populations, without their consent, in the name of “public health.”

And let’s not forget, recent studies have raised legitimate concerns about the risks of fluoride exposure for pregnant women and children. One 2019 study in JAMA Pediatrics linked prenatal fluoride exposure to lower IQ scores in boys. The CDC itself quietly revised fluoride exposure guidelines in recent years.

But of course, none of that matters to the bureaucrats and media hacks who reflexively attack anything that restores choice to the American people.

What DeSantis has done is simple: he’s empowered Floridians to make their own decisions about what goes into their bodies a principle that should’ve never been up for debate in the first place.

Once again, Florida is leading where others cower. And once again, the Left is throwing tantrums because someone stood up to their mandates.
