Democrats Face Backlash for Erecting Wall Around Chicago DNC Venue
Critics slam the hypocrisy of building a wall to protect the convention while opposing border security.
As the Democratic National Convention (DNC) gets underway in Chicago, the party is facing widespread mockery for the decision to erect a literal wall of fencing around the venue. The move, intended to secure the event from anticipated protests by anti-Israel and pro-Hamas groups, has sparked accusations of hypocrisy, given the Democrats’ longstanding opposition to former President Donald Trump’s border wall.
Local businesses, already on edge due to the expected demonstrations, have begun boarding up their windows in preparation. Scott Schapiro, a menswear store owner who has faced looting in the past, shared his cautious approach: “It’s better to be safe than sorry. Most retailers are eternal optimists… but it doesn’t always work out that way.”
Hypocrisy Exposed: Critics quickly seized on the irony of Democrats building a protective wall around the DNC. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) pointed out the inconsistency, tweeting, “VP Harris called Trump’s border wall stupid, waste of money. Now builds DNC border fence.” Others echoed similar sentiments, questioning how Democrats can justify walls for their own protection while opposing them at the nation’s borders.
Public Outcry: Social media buzzed with posts ridiculing the Democrats. One user quipped, “Democrats: ‘Walls can’t protect US Borders!! Walls are RACIST!!’ Also Democrats: ‘We need a Wall around the entire Chicago DNC Convention to protect us from our own Liberal Domestic Terrorists!!’”
Police Preparedness: The situation has escalated to the point where Chicago police officers have had their time off canceled to manage the influx of protesters. John Catanzara, a police union leader, warned that such measures could severely damage officer morale ahead of what’s expected to be a high-stress event.
As the convention progresses, the juxtaposition between the party’s actions and its rhetoric on border security is likely to remain a talking point. The Democrats may have built a wall to protect themselves in Chicago, but in doing so, they've opened themselves up to relentless criticism from all sides.
