Dave McCormick Secures Victory in Pennsylvania Senate Race
McCormick’s win marks a pivotal shift for Pennsylvania and the GOP
Republican businessman and Army veteran Dave McCormick has won the Pennsylvania Senate race, according to the Associated Press, in a critical victory that adds momentum to the GOP’s nationwide push for a strong Senate majority. With 99% of votes counted, McCormick held a lead of about 30,000 votes over Democrat Bob Casey, despite Casey’s initial reluctance to concede.
McCormick declared victory early Thursday, with his campaign pointing to the solid vote lead. Republican Senators Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Tom Cotton (R-AR), and John Thune (R-SD) joined the call for Casey to step aside, urging the three-term Democrat to acknowledge the outcome. “Any way you slice it, Dave McCormick will be the next United States Senator from Pennsylvania,” stated McCormick’s communications director, Elizabeth Gregory.
A Historic Campaign in Pennsylvania
This Senate race made history as Pennsylvania became the first state to see over $1 billion spent on campaign advertising, a testament to the stakes involved. McCormick’s surge in the polls came as he effectively framed the election as a choice between new leadership and entrenched politics. He contrasted his credentials as a West Point graduate and businessman against Casey’s decades-long political career, which McCormick argued reflected an out-of-touch, liberal agenda.
Pennsylvanians can see now it’s between a seventh-generation Pennsylvanian, an outsider, a business guy, someone who went to West Point and served in combat, versus a guy who’s been in elected office for 30 years and has been weak in a 99% vote for these liberal policies,” McCormick said on the campaign trail.
Casey’s Last-Minute Trump Appeal
Facing mounting challenges, Casey attempted an unusual shift in his campaign strategy by aligning himself with former President Donald Trump’s policies on trade and energy. In a last-minute ad, Casey portrayed himself as a supporter of fracking and claimed credit for supporting Trump’s tariffs on China, saying he “bucked Biden” on key issues affecting Pennsylvania’s economy.
However, the pivot didn’t resonate enough with voters in a state where the GOP has built momentum on messages of economic strength, energy independence, and opposition to unchecked liberal policies. McCormick’s campaign capitalized on this, painting Casey’s outreach to Trump voters as a disingenuous attempt to mask his track record on issues like inflation, crime, and Biden-aligned energy policies.
What McCormick’s Win Means for the GOP
McCormick’s victory reinforces Pennsylvania’s role as a swing state where Republicans can achieve critical wins with a strong message on conservative values and economic strength. His campaign also demonstrated the GOP’s ability to win without compromising on core principles, even in a state that voted blue in recent presidential elections. With a GOP majority in the Senate increasingly likely, McCormick’s win could mark the start of a legislative shift that prioritizes energy independence, crime reduction, and economic opportunity for Pennsylvanians.
This historic victory suggests that Republicans are resonating with voters who are disillusioned with entrenched politicians. As McCormick joins the Senate, he represents the kind of fresh leadership that many believe can chart a new course for Pennsylvania and the nation.
