Cruz Moves to Designate Muslim Brotherhood as Terror Group

Senator Ted Cruz leads the charge against a dangerous Islamist network with deep anti-American roots.

Senator Ted Cruz is once again stepping up to protect American interests this time with a bill to finally call the Muslim Brotherhood what it is a terrorist organization.

On Tuesday, the Texas Republican introduced the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act of 2025, a piece of legislation that revives a long-overdue initiative. While earlier versions of similar efforts stalled, Cruz’s latest bill is built on a smarter, bottom-up strategy aimed at holding each violent faction of the group accountable.

This is not a partisan talking point it's a global consensus. Our Middle Eastern allies like Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia already recognize the Muslim Brotherhood for what it is: a threat to national security, regional stability, and Western values.

Key components of Cruz's bill include:

  • Requiring Secretary of State Marco Rubio to identify all Muslim Brotherhood branches worldwide and designate those that meet terrorism criteria.

  • Creating a legal mechanism for the Brotherhood’s global wing to be sanctioned under the 1987 Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

  • Banning financial transactions and service interactions with the group under a formal "primary embargo."

This effort draws inspiration from President Trump's successful move in 2017 to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group—a policy shift that had real teeth and sent shockwaves through Tehran.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s intentions are not some vague, academic theory. This is the group behind Hamas, the terror faction responsible for countless rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. In fact, Hamas’s own charter calls it "a wing of the Muslim Brotherhood." The Brotherhood also orchestrated the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981 for the unforgivable sin of making peace with Israel.

Let’s not forget:

  • In April 2024, Jordan banned the Muslim Brotherhood entirely.

  • The Brotherhood operates in more than 80 countries and explicitly seeks to establish a global caliphate.

  • Its former Supreme Guide stated in 2010 that America “is heading towards its demise.”

Cruz’s initiative has earned strong backing from prominent Republicans like Senators Tom Cotton, Rick Scott, and Dave McCormick leaders who understand that national security must come before political correctness.

The bottom line? The Muslim Brotherhood isn’t just a regional problem it’s a global network with open hostility toward the United States and its allies. By formally labeling it a terrorist organization, the U.S. can finally cut off its lifelines, track its influence, and send a clear message we will not tolerate jihadist networks operating under the guise of political activism.

If Biden’s State Department won’t act, Congress must. America’s enemies are watching. It’s time to stop playing nice and start getting serious.
