Former CIA Analyst Who Leaked Israeli Strike Plans Sentenced to Three Years

Despite exposing top secret information to enemies, the lenient punishment raises serious national security concerns.

In yet another disturbing example of the erosion of accountability in Washington, a former CIA analyst who leaked highly sensitive Israeli strike plans against Iran has been handed a shockingly light prison sentence. Asif William Rahman, 34, of Vienna, Virginia, was sentenced Wednesday to just three years and one month in prison despite pleading guilty to the willful transmission of Top Secret national defense information.

Rahman, who had been employed by the CIA since 2016 and held Top Secret clearance, accessed and printed classified documents on October 17, 2024. Astonishingly, the very next day, those same documents surfaced online, including on pro-Iranian Telegram channels. These leaks revealed critical information gathered by U.S. satellites on Israeli military operations, compromising not only American intelligence capabilities but also endangering one of our closest allies.

  • Rahman could have faced up to 20 years in prison 10 years for each count under federal law.

  • Instead, the Biden Justice Department secured a mere 37-month sentence, a fraction of what national security experts say is appropriate for such a betrayal.

  • The leaked files included highly sensitive information restricted to members of the elite Five Eyes alliance: the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The documents detailed Israeli military preparations for airstrikes on Iran, which Israel executed later that month in retaliation for an Iranian ballistic missile attack. The leaked intelligence may have tipped off hostile regimes and endangered ongoing operations.

“For months, this defendant betrayed the American people and the oaths he took upon entering his office by leaking some of our Nation’s most closely held secrets,” said John Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security.

This isn’t just a story about one rogue analyst it’s a reflection of the broader breakdown of accountability within the current administration. Under Biden’s Department of Justice, traitors like Rahman receive slaps on the wrist, while political opponents are aggressively prosecuted for far lesser offenses. The American people deserve a government that prioritizes national security, not one that downplays treasonous acts for the sake of political expediency.

With increasing threats from adversaries like Iran and China, the stakes have never been higher. Our intelligence agencies cannot afford leniency for those who violate their oaths and put countless lives at risk. The American people should demand real consequences for such grave breaches anything less emboldens enemies and weakens our standing on the world stage.
