Chinese Company Indicted for Smuggling Pill-Making Machines Into the US

Beijing-linked operation helped flood American streets with fake fentanyl-laced pills as overdose deaths skyrocket.

In a shocking but sadly unsurprising development, a Chinese company and three of its nationals have been indicted for smuggling pill-making equipment into the United States tools that helped mass-produce lethal fake pills laced with fentanyl. This is not just another case of criminal activity. It's a national security crisis, and it’s coming directly from our greatest geopolitical rival.

The Trump-era Department of Justice recently announced that a federal grand jury returned an indictment against CapsulCN International Co. Ltd. and three Chinese citizens Xiochuan “Ricky” Pan, Tingyan “Monica” Yang, and Xi “Inna” Chen for smuggling and distributing industrial pill presses and counterfeit die molds into the U.S., in direct violation of the Controlled Substances Act.

These devices aren’t ordinary machinery. They’re the backbone of the counterfeit pill industry:

  • Pill presses and encapsulating machines can produce thousands of fake pills per hour, each potentially laced with fentanyl.

  • The fake pills are made to resemble legitimate pharmaceuticals misleading users into believing they are safe.

  • According to the CDC, nearly 72,000 overdose deaths in 2023 involved illegally manufactured fentanyl.

This operation is far from isolated. It’s part of a well-organized international scheme that Chinese businesses are increasingly involved in. The Department of Justice seized four domain names used by CapsulCN to peddle these pill presses across U.S. borders. This digital seizure is a start, but much more must be done.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated the Department will use "every weapon in its arsenal" to combat international drug producers poisoning Americans. That’s the kind of firm stance we need something we haven’t seen under the Biden administration, which has allowed this fentanyl epidemic to grow into a leading cause of death among Americans aged 18-45.

Let’s not ignore the numbers:

  • Over 250,000 Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses since 2018.

  • Illegally manufactured fentanyl now accounts for 7 out of every 10 overdose deaths.

  • Counterfeit pills are frequently traced back to equipment made in you guessed it China.

Why is Beijing allowed to keep shipping this poison into our country without consequence? Why are these machines making it past customs and into the hands of traffickers? It’s because we have an administration asleep at the wheel. While the DOJ under Trump aggressively pursued international narcotics threats, the current leadership is more concerned with climate summits and pronoun policies than the survival of its own citizens.

This indictment underscores a larger truth our fight against fentanyl is a fight for our nation’s survival. And until we have leadership in the White House with the courage to take on China head-on both economically and criminally the body count will only grow.
