China Spying on US Military in Escalating Espionage Campaign

Former CIA chief warns China is aggressively targeting U.S. service members and officials as arrests reveal shocking breaches.

The Chinese Communist Party’s war on America has entered a dangerous new phase one that involves targeting U.S. military personnel and government employees for espionage.

According to federal prosecutors, two active-duty Army soldiers, Jian Zhao and Li Tian, were arrested earlier this year for allegedly selling “Top Secret” military data to Chinese intelligence operatives. Their charges include leaking classified materials on U.S. weapons systems, troop readiness, and sensitive platforms like the Stryker combat vehicle and High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

This isn’t just a security failure it’s a wake-up call.

These cases confirm what national security officials have long warned Beijing is running a full-scale intelligence war against the United States, using bribes, deception, and digital infiltration to recruit insiders and steal our most guarded secrets.

The scope is staggering:

  • Tian allegedly used Google Drive to transmit classified documents and printed secret materials inside Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

  • Zhao is accused of selling 20 military hard drives, including some labeled “Secret,” and providing information on U.S. war readiness in a potential conflict with China.

  • In both cases, suspects reportedly received as little as $15,000 to $30,000, revealing how cheaply some are willing to betray their country.

According to former CIA station chief Dan Hoffman, China has “everybody in the U.S. government in its crosshairs.” He emphasized that Chinese agents frequently pose as innocuous contacts reaching out via LinkedIn or email to lure targets into sharing sensitive information without ever realizing they’re dealing with a hostile intelligence service.

“China wants U.S. military intel because they believe war with the U.S. is a real possibility,” Hoffman warned. And they’re not just targeting Americans they’re going after NATO personnel and allies across Asia.

This espionage operation is part of a broader strategy. In October 2024, five former University of Michigan students were charged with spying on a National Guard training exercise involving Taiwanese forces, allegedly on behalf of the CCP. They were confronted near Camp Grayling in Michigan while taking photos of military operations.

Michael Sobolik, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, said the CCP’s tactics in this new Cold War are “shameless” and wide-ranging, accusing Beijing of exploiting “every hook or crook” to acquire American secrets.

What’s worse: the Biden administration has remained largely passive, avoiding strong retaliatory measures and refusing to purge CCP influence in academia, Big Tech, or even our government institutions. Contrast that with the Trump administration, which aggressively targeted Chinese spy networks, closed down a Chinese consulate in Houston over espionage, and reshaped foreign policy to treat the CCP as the existential threat it is.

Now, as China's cyber and human intelligence operations ramp up, America must decide Will we confront this threat with strength or continue pretending it doesn’t exist?

The CCP isn’t playing games. They’re infiltrating, stealing, and preparing. And unless we respond with bold, uncompromising action, we’ll find ourselves outmaneuvered in the conflict they’ve already declared.
