China Surpasses Russia as Top Cyber Threat While U.S. Leadership Leaves Critical Posts Vacant

Rep. Don Bacon warns America is “rudderless” in cyber warfare as Biden White House stalls on key defense appointments.

While communist China escalates its cyber warfare campaign against the United States, Washington is asleep at the switch with no one steering the ship. That’s the stark warning from Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), who sounded the alarm on Sunday during an interview on CBS’s Face the Nation.

Bacon, who chairs the House Cyber, Information Technologies, and Innovation Subcommittee, confirmed that China has now overtaken Russia as the most dangerous cyber threat America faces. And it’s not just theory anymore Chinese hackers have already carried out the first AI-driven cyber espionage campaign, targeting over 30 U.S. companies and institutions using advanced artificial intelligence tools.

“China is attacking us every single day and Russia, too but we’ve had no commander in charge of Cyber Command for eight months,” Bacon warned. “We’re rudderless in a time when China is attacking us every day.”

Let that sink in.

  • The United States currently has no confirmed commander of U.S. Cyber Command.

  • The top two positions at the National Security Agency remain vacant.

  • Meanwhile, AI-powered cyberattacks are already being deployed by China with unprecedented speed and automation.

This isn’t just incompetence it’s dereliction of duty by the Biden administration.

According to reports, China’s state-sponsored hackers used AI technology developed by U.S.-based firm Anthropic including its Claude coding tool to automate cyber break-ins and probe digital vulnerabilities faster than any human hacker could. While the White House and left-wing media were busy pushing “misinformation task forces” and TikTok bans, China was already miles ahead weaponizing our own technology.

Rep. Bacon rightly slammed the administration for failing to take this seriously. “Our cyber capabilities are going backward,” he said. “That’s something that really concerns me, and I’ve been pushing the White House to deal with this.”

But let’s be honest this isn’t new. Under Joe Biden, national security has taken a back seat to political posturing, identity politics, and reckless spending. Whether it’s an open southern border or a Chinese spy balloon hovering across the Midwest, Team Biden always seems a step behind or completely unaware.

Compare that to President Trump, who didn’t hesitate to prioritize cyber defense, pressure allies to boost security spending, and confront China head-on in the trade, tech, and intelligence arenas. Under Trump, China knew where the line was and what happened when they crossed it.

Now, we’re watching in real time as a foreign adversary leverages American-made AI to break into our networks, siphon our data, and outpace our digital defenses and no one at the top seems to care.

It’s time to stop pretending this is just a tech issue. It’s a national security crisis. And until we have leadership that takes it seriously, America will keep falling further behind while our enemies race ahead, unchecked.
