In front of a cheering crowd in California, she suggested that if Immigration and Customs Enforcement showed up, her audience would physically attack them.

At the kickoff of her “Little Miss Drama Tour” in Palm Desert, Cardi B scanned the crowd and asked whether any Guatemalans or Mexicans were present. Then she delivered the line that quickly went viral if ICE came into the venue, “we gon’ jump they a----.” She even claimed to have bear mace in the back and vowed that agents were not “taking my fans.”

The comments immediately drew criticism, particularly given the already volatile national debate surrounding illegal immigration and border enforcement. The official account for the responded pointedly, writing that “as long as she doesn’t drug and rob our agents, we’ll consider that an improvement over her past behavior.” The remark referenced a prior admission by Cardi B that she had drugged and robbed men during her time working as a stripper.

The controversy lands at a time when immigration enforcement is front and center in the 2024 election cycle. Under the Biden administration, encounters at the southern border have shattered records. In fiscal year 2023 alone, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported more than 2.4 million encounters nationwide the highest number ever recorded. Meanwhile, major cities such as New York and Chicago have struggled to manage the influx of migrants, with local officials warning of strained budgets and overwhelmed shelters.

Against that backdrop, a celebrity encouraging hostility toward federal officers is more than just a throwaway line at a concert. It reflects a broader cultural shift where immigration enforcement is not merely criticized but openly mocked and threatened.

ICE, a division of the tasked with enforcing immigration laws passed by Congress. Whether one supports stricter border security or more permissive immigration policies, federal agents carrying out their legal duties should not be targets of incitement. Yet the rhetoric at the Palm Desert show suggested exactly that.

The irony deepens when considering Cardi B’s recent comments about. After visiting the Middle Eastern kingdom, she praised its cleanliness and order, noting she had not seen homelessness and remarking on how bright and well-maintained the country appeared. She acknowledged the nation’s history of restrictions on women and gay individuals but suggested it had “opened up more.”

Her comparison to the United States was less flattering. She lamented America’s lack of “courtesy” and criticized visible homelessness, calling the country “dusty” and “ghetto.”

There are important facts that often get lost in celebrity soundbites:

• The United States recorded over 650,000 homeless individuals in its most recent annual count, a 12% increase from the previous year.

• Inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, the highest rate in four decades, squeezing working-class Americans and contributing to urban decline.

• Border encounters have more than doubled compared to levels seen in the late 2010s, placing historic pressure on immigration systems.

These are serious policy challenges that demand thoughtful solutions not concert-stage threats.

Critics argue that the Biden administration’s approach to immigration has been defined by weak enforcement and mixed messaging. From halting border wall construction to narrowing interior enforcement priorities, the administration has been accused of signaling leniency at a time when global migration pressures are intensifying. The result, according to many law enforcement officials, has been chaos at the border and growing frustration in communities far from it.

The broader concern is cultural. When influential figures with massive followings joke about attacking ICE agents, it normalizes hostility toward the rule of law. Words matter, especially when they come from someone with tens of millions of social media followers and a large, impressionable fan base.

The 2024 presidential election will likely hinge in part on immigration and public safety. Polling consistently shows that a majority of Americans support stronger border enforcement and clearer immigration rules. As the campaign season heats up, voters will have to decide whether the country continues down its current path or pivots toward stricter enforcement and renewed emphasis on sovereignty.

In the meantime, public figures would do well to remember that rhetoric has consequences. Political disagreements are one thing. Encouraging violence against federal officers is another.
