Canadian PM Candidate Warns Trump of Unprecedented Trade Retaliation
Freeland’s Anti-American Rhetoric Signals Trudeau 2.0.

Canadian Prime Minister hopeful Chrystia Freeland is making it clear that she’s no different from Justin Trudeau when it comes to hostility toward the United States. The former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance issued a direct threat to President Donald Trump this week, warning that Canada will deliver the “biggest trade blow that the United States has ever endured” in retaliation for tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Freeland’s comments, made during an interview on CNN, came after Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum, set to take effect on March 12. Prime Minister Trudeau immediately condemned the move, and Freeland doubled down, insisting that Canada would strike back hard.
Freeland outlined her plan for so-called “smart and targeted” retaliation, which includes:
A 100% tariff on all Teslas, deliberately targeting a key American company.
Blocking Wisconsin dairy farmers from selling their products in Canada, openly admitting she wants to harm Trump’s base.
Encouraging other countries to join in punishing the U.S., a clear attempt to undermine America’s economic strength.
Freeland also dismissed Americans as being largely indifferent toward Canada, before boasting that her country is the U.S.'s largest trading partner. Yet rather than strengthening that partnership, she is determined to weaponize it against Trump and his supporters.
Freeland’s meltdown ignores the fact that Trump’s tariffs are designed to protect American industries, ensuring that foreign competitors don’t undercut U.S. workers. The tariffs are not about hurting Canada they’re about restoring fairness in trade and preventing economic exploitation.
Unlike the weak leadership under Trudeau, Freeland appears eager to follow in his footsteps, attacking American interests rather than working toward mutually beneficial solutions.
Freeland’s threats reveal the left’s typical playbook: instead of negotiating in good faith, she seeks to punish American workers, farmers, and businesses that support Trump. Her admission that Canada will specifically target “people who are the most influential” in Trump’s base is nothing short of election interference.
With Trudeau’s popularity plummeting, Freeland is clearly trying to position herself as a tough leader. But if her idea of leadership is waging economic war on the U.S., she should expect nothing less than Trump hitting back twice as hard.
