Ongoing Battle: Biden's Actions Against the Second Amendment

President Biden’s stance on gun control clashes with his defense of Hunter Biden’s federal gun charges.

The gun trial of Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, began Monday with jury selection. First Lady Jill Biden attended, and the family spent the weekend in Wilmington, Delaware, preparing for the trial.

Hunter Biden faces charges of illegally purchasing and possessing a firearm while addicted to drugs, a clear violation of federal law. Despite pleading not guilty, evidence from his memoir and the infamous "laptop from hell" suggests he was indeed addicted at the time of purchase. Three women connected to him—his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, Hallie Biden (his late brother’s widow), and Lunden Roberts (the mother of one of his children)—are set to testify regarding his drug use.

President Biden, who consistently defends his son, maintains, “My son has done nothing wrong.” This stance is particularly ironic given Biden’s harsh criticism of guns and legal gun owners.

  • False Statistics
President Biden has falsely claimed that firearms are the leading cause of death for children. However, fact-checkers at The Washington Post have corrected this, noting that motor vehicle accidents still outnumber firearm deaths among individuals under 18.

  • Assault Weapons Ban
Biden’s push to ban so-called assault weapons is misguided. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center report, handguns were involved in 59% of gun murders in 2020, whereas rifles, including those labeled as “assault weapons,” were involved in only 3% of firearm murders.

  • High-Capacity Magazines
Biden’s call to ban high-capacity magazines (those holding 10 or more rounds) overlooks practical self-defense needs. For instance, a single mother in remote Montana, facing multiple intruders, would benefit from a larger magazine to protect her family effectively.

  • Background Checks
Expanded background checks, another of Biden’s demands, already exist for purchases from licensed dealers. Private transfers, such as gifts between family members, do not require them. Notably, Hunter Biden passed his background check despite his subsequent charges for falsifying the application.

The ultimate fallacy in Biden's approach is the belief that stricter laws will deter criminals who, by definition, do not follow the law. From 2017 to 2021, over a million firearms were stolen from legal gun owners. Additionally, a 2016 survey revealed that only 7% of prisoners who used firearms during their crimes purchased them from licensed dealers; the majority acquired them illegally.

The hypocrisy in President Biden’s stance on gun control is glaring as his son’s trial unfolds. While defending Hunter, he continues his assault on the Second Amendment and legal gun owners. This inconsistency is evident, showcasing a profound disconnect between his personal defense of family and his public policy positions.
