Proposed Rule by Biden-Harris Admin Grants Illegal Immigrants Access to Taxpayer-Funded College Prep
GOP lawmakers criticize the proposal, warning it takes resources from low-income American citizens.
The Biden-Harris administration has introduced a controversial new rule that would allow illegal immigrants access to taxpayer-funded college preparatory programs originally designed to assist low-income American citizens. This proposed rule has sparked significant backlash from GOP lawmakers, who argue that it would divert essential resources away from American students.
The new rule from the Department of Education aims to expand eligibility for federal TRIO programs to include individuals without immigration status, specifically those who qualify for the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA). These TRIO programs are intended to support low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities from middle school through post-baccalaureate programs.
Key Points:
Expanded Eligibility: The proposed rule seeks to allow DACA recipients to access federal TRIO programs, which were previously reserved for low-income American citizens.
GOP Opposition: Rep. Jim Banks (R-IN) and Virginia Foxx (R-NC) have strongly opposed the rule, arguing it would deprive American citizens of critical college preparatory aid.
“The Biden-Harris administration’s proposal would take college preparatory aid away from American citizens and give it to illegal aliens,” Rep. Jim Banks stated. He urged House Republicans to pass his American Students First Act to ensure these taxpayer-funded programs remain available to American families.
Virginia Foxx, Chairwoman of the House Education and Workforce Committee, criticized the administration's priorities, saying, “There’s a laundry list of problems facing students and postsecondary education today: Costs are soaring, the FAFSA rollout has been butchered, anti-semitism is running rampant across college campuses, just to name a few. But what is the Biden administration focused on? Siphoning resources away from low-income American citizens by stretching college-prep programs thin to cover illegal immigrants.”
The proposal comes amid a record surge in illegal immigration under the Biden-Harris administration, with more than 10 million people unlawfully crossing the border since January 2021. This surge has heightened concerns among Americans, with many advocating for reduced immigration and increased deportations.
Public opinion reflects these concerns, with many voters considering illegal immigration a critical issue as the November elections approach. The Biden-Harris administration's latest move to include illegal immigrants in college preparatory programs funded by taxpayer dollars is likely to further intensify the debate over immigration policy and its impact on American society.
