Biden Tells Kamala Harris She’s ‘Not Going Anywhere’ Amid 2024 Loss
Speculation Grows Over Harris’s Next Political Move.
Despite a crushing defeat in the 2024 election, President Joe Biden publicly reassured Vice President Kamala Harris of her place in the Democratic Party’s future. Speaking at a Democratic National Committee (DNC) holiday event in Washington, D.C., Biden sought to bolster Harris amid growing speculation about her next steps.
“I knew what I was doing when I asked her to be my vice president,” Biden told the crowd. “I knew her. I knew of her. I knew about her. I knew her record. I trusted her. She always served this country with purpose and integrity, and she always will.”
Turning directly to Harris, Biden quipped, “You’re not going anywhere, kid, because we’re not going to let you go.” His comments were met with laughter and applause, but they raised more questions than they answered about Harris’s political future.
Harris, who stepped in as the Democratic nominee earlier this year after Biden’s withdrawal from the race, failed to secure a victory against President-elect Donald Trump. Following the loss, POLITICO reported that Harris has privately told advisers to “keep her options open” for future political opportunities.
Among the possibilities reportedly under consideration: a run for governor of California in 2026 or another attempt at the White House in 2028. According to CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere, Harris has been telling donors and allies, “You haven’t seen the last of me. I’m not going quietly into the night.”
Harris’s supporters believe she could dominate the California gubernatorial race, calling it a “layup.” However, such a move would likely end her aspirations for a 2028 presidential campaign, as she would need to declare her candidacy for governor almost immediately.
Democratic insiders remain divided about Harris’s future. Some argue that she didn’t get a fair chance in 2024 and believe she deserves another shot at the presidency in 2028. Others warn that a bruising primary fight could damage her further.
“She would not have a cleared field in the Democratic primary and could lose the nomination,” Dovere reported.
Harris herself offered words of encouragement to Democrats at Sunday’s event, insisting, “We are not defeated. Let’s be clear about that. We are strong… and that work must continue.”
Biden’s public endorsement of Harris could be seen as an attempt to maintain party unity after a bitterly disappointing election cycle. But with rising skepticism about the Democratic Party’s leadership, the road ahead is uncertain.
Harris faces a challenging decision: pursue a governorship and strengthen her political credentials, or risk another contentious run for the presidency in a fractured Democratic Party. Either way, it’s clear the Democratic establishment is working overtime to keep her in the spotlight.
For now, Harris insists she will remain engaged, promising, “I will be with you every step of the way.” Whether her political journey continues as a governor, presidential contender, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
