Biden Delivers Final Address, Attempts to Cement Legacy Amid Scandals
Farewell speech overlooks major controversies, focuses on climate, social media, and attacks on Trump.
President Joe Biden delivered his final address from the Oval Office on Wednesday evening, capping off five decades in politics with a speech attempting to frame his legacy. The approximately 18-minute address largely highlighted Biden’s preferred achievements, while glaring omissions left many questioning his narrative.
In his farewell remarks, Biden claimed credit for the recently brokered hostage deal between Israel and Hamas, while avoiding mention of President-elect Donald Trump’s role in pressuring Hamas to release hostages. Biden also touted his record on climate change, health care, job creation, and foreign policy, but left out critical failures, including:
The disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, resulting in American and Afghan casualties.
The continued erosion of peace in the Middle East and Europe.
The pardoning of his son, Hunter Biden, following years of scandal and investigations.
Biden warned of an alleged rise in an American “oligarchy,” taking what appeared to be aim at Trump and Elon Musk, among others. He tied recent hurricanes in North Carolina and wildfires in California to climate change, framing them as crises demanding further government action.
He also called for increased regulation of social media, accusing platforms of enabling “misinformation” and “disinformation.” Biden appeared to criticize recent moves by tech companies like Meta, which reduced reliance on third-party fact-checkers. “Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation enabling the abuse of power,” Biden claimed, advocating for stronger government oversight of social platforms.
In his address, Biden pushed for measures aimed at reshaping U.S. governance, including:
Implementing 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices.
Enacting legislation to curb so-called “dark money” in political campaigns.
Proposing a constitutional amendment to clarify that no president is immune from prosecution for crimes committed in office a pointed suggestion with Trump as the likely target.
Biden’s farewell message ignored the significant damage wrought by his administration. From skyrocketing inflation to a weakened global presence, his presidency has left Americans with record economic struggles and heightened security risks. While Biden sought to highlight unity and progress, the reality is a fractured nation yearning for competent leadership.
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the Oval Office, Biden’s address may serve as a sobering reminder of why a strong, decisive leader is critical to restoring America’s strength and prosperity.
