In Heated NBC Interview, Biden Affirms: ‘I Have Command of All My Faculties’
President Clashes with Lester Holt Over Inflammatory Rhetoric and Cognitive Concerns.
President Joe Biden had a contentious interview with NBC News host Lester Holt on Monday, during which he repeatedly clashed with Holt, struggled to answer questions, and made several false claims.
When questioned about his inflammatory language towards former President Donald Trump, especially in light of the recent assassination attempt, Biden falsely claimed that he does not use such language. Holt pressed him on this, leading to a tense exchange.
Examples of Biden’s inflammatory rhetoric against Trump include:
March 22, 2018: “If we were in high school, I’d take him [Trump] behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.”
September 1, 2022: “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.”
March 21, 2024: “That’s Hitler’s language. That’s not America’s.”
June 28, 2024: “Donald Trump is a genuine threat to this nation. He’s a threat to our freedom. He’s a threat to our democracy. He’s literally a threat to everything America stands for.”
July 8, 2024: “It’s time to put Trump in a bullseye.”
July 12, 2024: “Trump is a threat to this nation.”
Biden also refused to commit to debating Trump before the next scheduled debate in September. When Holt asked if he was eager to “get back on the horse,” Biden retorted, “I’m on the horse! Where have you been?”
Defending his mental acuity, Biden declared, “What I’m doing is going out and demonstrating to the American people that I have command of all my faculties, that I don’t need notes, I don’t need teleprompters.”
The interview further deteriorated when Holt questioned Biden about his cognitive decline. Biden became visibly agitated, demanding the media focus on Trump's false claims and fumbling over his own words in the process.
Biden's behavior in the interview has raised concerns about his ability to handle the pressures of the presidency, particularly in light of ongoing criticisms about his cognitive health. This interview is likely to fuel further debate about his fitness for office and the tone of his rhetoric.
