Biden Hints at Democratic Pressure to Step Down, Says He Would’ve Won
In a revealing interview, President Biden sidesteps claims of party pressure, while maintaining confidence in his ability to defeat Trump.
In a revealing interview on ABC’s “The View,” President Joe Biden sidestepped questions about whether his own party forced him out of the 2024 presidential race, sparking further speculation that Democrats had pressured him to step aside. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other party insiders are believed to have led the charge after Biden’s faltering debate performance against Donald Trump in June. However, Biden insists his decision to withdraw was based on his own reflection and not external pressure.
When asked directly by Alyssa Farah Griffin if he felt his “hand was forced” by Democrats, Biden deflected, claiming his relationship with Pelosi remained “fine” and downplaying any internal resistance. “I never fully believed the assertions that somehow there was this overwhelming reluctance of my running again,” Biden said. Despite growing concerns within the party about his chances in 2024, Biden maintained that his polling numbers were still within striking distance of Trump.
The media and Democratic establishment have increased pressure on Biden over the summer, with many questioning whether his age and declining approval ratings were liabilities for the party. However, Biden, who is 81, suggested that age was becoming a difficult reality for him to accept, quipping, “It’s hard for me to even say how old I am. No, I’m serious… holy God, that can’t be right.”
Even amid signs of tension within his party, Biden appeared confident when asked if he could have beaten Trump had he stayed in the race. “Yes, I was confident I would beat Trump. He’s a loser,” Biden declared, doubling down on his belief that he could have triumphed over his longtime rival once again.
This candid interview comes as whispers grow louder about the Democratic Party’s push for a fresh face in 2024. While Biden did not confirm that Pelosi and other party leaders directly pushed him out, his evasiveness on the matter suggests that pressure from the Democratic elite may have been a key factor in his decision.
As Democrats scramble to find a successor, Biden's comments leave room for continued speculation about the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to his withdrawal from the race. Whether Biden's confidence in defeating Trump would have been proven right remains an open question, but his remarks underscore the ongoing political drama as the 2024 race approaches.
