President Joe Biden stirred outrage on Tuesday by blatantly lying to justify a divisive comment he made about supporters of former President Donald Trump. During a campaign call that night, Biden labeled Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” a stunning attack on the millions of Americans who continue to back the former president. The next day, he scrambled to clean up the backlash, but his attempted explanation only deepened the mistrust.
Biden attempted to soften his words, posting a response on X (formerly Twitter), where he claimed that he had merely been referring to “the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico” from a speaker at Trump’s recent Madison Square Garden rally. “That’s all I meant to say,” he insisted, adding that “the comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
Here’s the problem: that’s not what Biden actually said.
What Biden Really Said: During his call, Biden took direct aim at Trump supporters, saying, “The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.” This wasn't just about a comedian’s comments but a sweeping attack on those who support Trump.
Misleading Apology: Biden's attempt to pivot his words as a critique of “hateful rhetoric” is a glaring rewrite of what he actually expressed, undermining any credibility to his apology.
Pattern of Division: Biden’s repeated use of divisive rhetoric contrasts sharply with his calls for unity, highlighting the hypocrisy in his stance. This is the same president who vowed to bring America together but continues to alienate millions of voters by vilifying them as "garbage."
Biden’s attempt to paint himself as a unifier continues to fall flat. His administration is beset by double standards and quick-to-blame tactics while portraying any dissenters as morally flawed. This latest episode is just one more example of his long-standing habit of disrespecting a significant segment of the population.
If the Biden administration genuinely wants unity, it should start by respecting Americans on both sides of the aisle and accepting that millions disagree with his policies and approach. Instead, Biden's words fuel a toxic narrative that leaves the country even more divided.
