Biden Admin Blew Over $1 Million Of Taxpayer Money On Embassy Pools In War Zones
Sen. Joni Ernst slams Biden’s State Department for “splashy spending” as Trump’s team moves to restore accountability.

While Americans struggle with record inflation and skyrocketing costs, the Biden administration has been funneling more than $1 million in taxpayer dollars into renovating swimming pools at U.S. embassies including in war-torn and unstable nations like Iraq, Sudan, and Haiti. The shocking revelations come from a new report released by Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), who is calling out the administration for reckless and tone-deaf spending.
“The Biden State Department threw a blowout summer pool party on your dime,” Ernst said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “Bureaucrats might think wasting millions is a drop in the bucket, but I am sick and tired of taxpayers getting tossed in the deep end by Washington. I will continue working with the Trump administration to put a stop to the splashy spending of the Biden years.”
The report revealed staggering expenses:
$444,000 for an indoor pool dehumidification system at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.
$41,259 spent on pool rehab at the U.S. embassy in Moscow just months after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
$24,000 for a new pool deck in Sudan, where the embassy suspended operations due to violent conflicts.
Pool renovations in Haiti (2 pools), Iraq (5 pools), Sudan (3 pools), Russia (1 pool), Zimbabwe (1 pool), and Ghana (1 pool) totaling over $1.2 million.
An additional $173,000 contract to overhaul a pool at the U.S. embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Ernst’s report highlights the absurdity of such spending when many of these countries are under travel advisories due to armed conflict, terrorism, or civil unrest. For instance, Sudan remains one of the most dangerous nations for U.S. personnel, yet Biden’s State Department greenlit luxury pool upgrades there.
This isn’t the first time Democrats have been caught wasting taxpayer dollars on overseas facilities. The Obama administration drew heavy criticism for spending millions on embassy art installations and unnecessary aesthetic projects while ignoring more pressing diplomatic and security needs.
U.S. embassies are funded through congressional appropriations to the State Department, but under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Trump administration has made cutting wasteful spending a priority. Rubio recently shuttered USAID, citing its failure to deliver programs that genuinely serve American interests. “This era of government-sanctioned inefficiency has officially come to an end,” Rubio declared, vowing to ensure foreign aid programs are run “with more accountability, strategy, and efficiency.”
The Biden administration’s lavish pool renovations are a glaring example of what many conservatives see as Washington’s out-of-touch priorities. At a time when taxpayers are struggling to afford basics like groceries and energy, funneling hundreds of thousands into poolside luxury for bureaucrats abroad is nothing short of insulting.
