Arkansas Highway Police and federal partners put 393 drivers and commercial vehicles out of service during a 48-hour enforcement operation that ended October 29, TruckReport USA reports. The Transportation Department published its own results on November 4 under the name Operation Highway Shield, saying the sweep yanked more than 300 dangerous truckers and illegal immigrants off U.S. roads.

The operation ran from 6 a.m. Tuesday, October 27, to 6 a.m. Thursday, October 29, according to TruckReport USA. Arkansas Highway Police worked with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Officers ran enhanced checks at designated weigh stations along approved interstate and highway corridors.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation release listed 1,724 FMCSA inspections, more than 330 unqualified or unauthorized drivers identified and 183 English language proficiency disqualifications. It also counted 74 immigration violations that led to federal immigration enforcement, more than 1,000 motor carrier safety violations, 369 traffic citations or warnings, 44 criminal arrests and one stolen trailer recovered. Officers also identified and investigated suspected drug trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling and cargo theft they came across during the stops, the highway police said.

FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs said the operation sends a message that anyone who puts safety at risk will be held accountable, TruckReport USA reports. Arkansas Highway Police Chief Jeff Holmes said every unsafe truck or driver taken off the road represents a potential collision prevented.
