AP’s FBI Timeline Does Not Match DOJ’s
A comparison of AP’s report and DOJ’s release shows a date mismatch and an important distinction about network breaches.
The Associated Press report carried by ABC News says the FBI and Justice Department announced the hacking-tool seizures Wednesday. DOJ’s Office of Public Affairs dates its release Thursday, October 8, 2026, and says the announcement occurred that day. Those accounts do not match on the announcement’s timing.
The AP page itself carries an October 8, 2026, 2:12 PM ET timestamp. DOJ’s release also says the accompanying cybersecurity advisory was published in conjunction with the seizures announced that day. The mismatch concerns when officials announced the action, not a documented date on which every seizure occurred.
There is a separate distinction in the target lists. DOJ identifies a South Carolina power company, airports in Japan and Poland, a multinational nongovernmental organization, Taiwanese natural gas and power companies, and two Taiwanese universities as Microscan scanning targets. According to the department, Microscan searched networks for vulnerabilities that could later be exploited.
DOJ describes FishHub differently: it facilitated targeted phishing and downloaded additional malware after an initial network compromise. That malware could enable unauthorized remote access or search for files and send them to servers. The department identifies approximately 20 Taiwanese universities as confirmed victims of FishHub activity.
AP groups the power company, airports, universities and other organizations together as targets of the tools. It does not say every listed network was breached, but it leaves out DOJ’s more precise division between scanning targets and confirmed FishHub victims. Readers should get the correct announcement timeline and a clear account of what officials established about each tool.
