Abbott Promises 100 Percent Tariff on New Yorkers Fleeing to Texas
As Trump warns of NYC’s collapse under a socialist mayor, Texas draws the line against liberal migrants.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has had enough of failed blue-state refugees flooding his state and bringing their failed politics with them. On the eve of New York City’s high-stakes mayoral election, Abbott announced he would impose a “100% tariff” on anyone moving from the Big Apple to the Lone Star State after polls close on Election Day.
“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone moving to Texas from NYC,” Abbott wrote on X.
The bold if symbolic declaration was made just before New Yorkers cast their votes in a bitter race between former Democrat governor Andrew Cuomo and far-left socialist Zohran Mamdani. While Abbott’s comment may not carry legal authority in a federal sense, it sends a clear message. Texans are fed up with liberal urban refugees who vote for destruction and then try to escape the consequences.
It’s not just Abbott raising the alarm. President Donald Trump also weighed in on the race, issuing a blistering warning about Mamdani, a self-described socialist and former state assemblyman with a radical agenda.
“It can only get worse with a communist at the helm,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “New York City will be a complete and total economic and social disaster should Mamdani win.”
Trump, who endorsed Cuomo (now running as an independent), made it clear that a Mamdani victory would result in federal funds being slashed aside from legally required minimums.
“I don’t want to send, as president, good money after bad,” Trump said.
Abbott and Trump are right to sound the alarm.
Millions have fled Democrat-run states like California, Illinois, and New York in the past few years. The latest IRS migration data shows New York lost over $25 billion in taxable income in 2022 alone, with many of those dollars landing in Florida and Texas. And while red states are booming economically, they’re also increasingly forced to absorb the social chaos and political baggage of leftist escapees.
Abbott’s tongue-in-cheek “tariff” taps into a deeper truth Texans are tired of becoming the life raft for people who sank their own states. You voted for crime, high taxes, and anti-business policies? Fine. Live with them. Don’t come south looking for freedom and then try to vote it out of existence here.
And the threat is real. Whether it’s Austin turning into a mini-Portland or suburban counties shifting purple, the cultural invasion is underway. Texas is not a dumping ground for failed progressive experiments.
Mamdani, whose platform includes radical housing policies, defunding police, and open borders, represents everything that is wrong with the modern Democratic Party. If elected, New York City will continue its downward spiral and if recent history is any indicator, more residents will run.
Abbott is simply putting his foot down. No more open borders not at the Rio Grande, and not at the state line with New York.
