Abbott Seeks to Remove Democrat Gene Wu for Leading Texas Walkout

Governor calls rogue lawmaker’s stunt a constitutional breach and threat to functioning government.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking bold action to defend the rule of law and he's setting his sights on Democrat House Caucus Chair Gene Wu, who led the latest disgraceful stunt to grind the Texas legislature to a halt.

On Tuesday, Abbott filed a lawsuit with the Texas Supreme Court seeking to remove Wu from office, arguing that his decision to flee the state with over 50 other Democrats to block a quorum vote on GOP redistricting violates the state constitution and amounts to forfeiting his seat.

“If representatives are free not to show up whenever they choose, then Texans simply do not have a representative government,” Abbott wrote. “In fact, they don’t have a functioning government at all.”

This move comes after Wu and fellow Democrats fled to Illinois to sabotage the Republican effort to pass congressional redistricting maps that are projected to give the GOP five additional House seats. Rather than engage in debate and accept the legislative process, these Democrats did what they always do when they lose they ran.

Abbott isn’t letting them off the hook. His lawsuit argues that:

  • Leaving a constitutionally mandated session constitutes a forfeiture of office.

  • Soliciting donations to cover the $500 daily fine for skipping session may constitute bribery.

  • The future of Texas’s functioning government is at stake if legislators can just abandon their duties at will.

Gene Wu, naturally, claims he’s the victim here. He accused Abbott of conspiring with former President Donald Trump to push “a racist gerrymandered map.” But Wu isn’t fooling anyone he’s part of the same party that screams about “protecting democracy” while fleeing democratic responsibility.

“Let me be unequivocal about my actions and my duty,” Wu said. “My constitutional duty is to not be a willing participant.” if Democrats can’t win, they’ll tear the system down.

Meanwhile, President Trump made it clear what’s at stake “We have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats,” Trump said. “I got the highest vote in the history of Texas... and we are entitled to five more seats.”

Exactly. Texas voters elected a Republican legislature and a Republican governor. Democrats don’t get to override that with theatrics and out-of-state fundraising tours.

This lawsuit isn’t just about one legislator. It’s about preserving accountability, law, and representative government. If Democrats can skip town anytime the numbers aren’t in their favor, the entire democratic process collapses.

And to make matters worse, California Governor Gavin Newsom is now threatening retaliatory redistricting of his own despite overseeing one of the most gerrymandered states in the country. The left’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Governor Abbott is right to push back hard. If you don’t show up to do your job, you don’t deserve to hold it.
