A Rift in the Ranks: Pence Clashes with Trump Over 2020 Election Charges

Published:

A confrontation is brewing within the upper echelons of the GOP. Former Vice President Mike Pence isn’t holding back in his criticism of former President Donald Trump over the charges stemming from the contentious 2020 election.

On Tuesday, the news broke that Trump had been slapped with four felony charges, related to alleged misconduct during the 2020 election saga. The charges range from conspiracy to defraud the United States to attempting to obstruct an official proceeding. Key to the indictment were notes provided by Pence, detailing the dialogues he had with Trump between the election and the January 6th Capitol event.

In the aftermath of the indictment, Pence took to Twitter to express his backing for the Justice Department, coupling his support with a sharp critique of Trump. Then, he reinforced his stance during a Fox News interview on Wednesday afternoon.

Host Martha MacCallum suggested Trump had merely asked Pence to “pause” the certification of the election results in 2020. Pence quickly countered, “Let’s, let’s be clear on this point, it wasn’t just to ask for a ‘pause.'”

Going further, Pence stated, “The president specifically asked me, and his gaggle of crackpot lawyers asked me, to literally reject votes, which would have resulted in the issue being turned over to the House of Representatives, and literally chaos would have ensued.”

Pence suggested critics of his choice not to reject elector slates on January 6th should “read the indictment” from Special Counsel Jack Smith. He affirmed, “The American people deserve to know that President Trump and his advisers didn’t just ask me to pause, they asked me to reject votes, return votes, essentially to overturn the election.”

Remaining steadfast, Pence maintained that he rejected Trump’s request outright, stating that he fulfilled his “duty”. This statement has inevitably stirred up reactions from the public, with one viewer going as far as to label Pence a “swamp creature.”

Unsurprisingly, Trump had a swift response to Pence’s comments, hitting back in a post on Truth Social. While Pence has launched his 2024 presidential campaign, he has been struggling in the polls, with figures lingering in the low single digits.

In the midst of this political fracas, it’s vital to remember the overarching principles of conservatism: adherence to the constitution, the rule of law, and respect for the democratic process. As spectators of this unfolding drama, it is our duty to uphold these values and remain critical, discerning observers of the political landscape.
