Recent developments reveal that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has been vindicated. The Justice Department (DOJ) confirmed on Tuesday that the probe into bribery allegations involving President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, is indeed ongoing.
Comer drew attention to this confirmation by sharing a tweet from an investigative journalist, which showcased a recent letter from U.S. Attorney David Weiss addressed to GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. It is worth noting that Weiss is currently presiding over the investigation into Hunter’s international business dealings.
The letter outlines that the inquiries concerning bribery allegations linked to Hunter and Joe Biden, pertaining to FBI FD 1023 (Ukraine bribery claims), are connected to an ongoing investigation.
In reaction to this news, Comer tweeted: “Just as I said, Jamie Raskin 𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐃 about the FBI briefing he & I had. The FBI told us the FD 1023 was part of an ongoing investigation.”
For context, Rep. Raskin of Maryland is a Democrat and the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee.
A couple of months ago, the FBI presented the FD 1023 form to Comer and fellow Oversight Committee members. This document captures the claims made by a whistleblower in 2020, alleging that both Joe and Hunter Biden received $5 million from the Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, during Joe’s tenure as Vice President.
Raskin, however, argued post-briefing that the DOJ, under then-Attorney General Bill Barr, determined there was no need to escalate from an initial assessment to a preliminary investigation because there was no suspicion of “criminal activity.”
Barr swiftly refuted Raskin’s assertion last month, categorically stating, “It’s not true.”
Instead, Barr explained, “It wasn’t closed down. On the contrary, it was sent to Delaware for further investigation,” referring to the ongoing inquiry into Hunter’s business dealings led by U.S. Attorney David Weiss.
Despite this, Raskin maintained his stance, declaring, “I stand 100% by my statements.”
When questioned about the allegation of receiving a $5 million bribe, Biden responded, “Where’s the money?” He dismissed it as “a bunch of malarkey.”
It’s important to note that during his vice presidency, Biden served as the Obama administration’s lead on Ukraine policy while his son Hunter was on Burisma’s board of directors, reportedly earning $1 million annually.
In 2018, Biden openly recounted his ultimatum to then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to fire prosecutor Viktor Shokin or forfeit $1 billion in U.S. loan guarantees. Interestingly, at that time, Shokin was investigating potential corruption at Burisma.
With the recent confirmation from the DOJ, it appears that the investigation into these bribery allegations is far from over. The saga continues, and as always, the truth will inevitably surface.
