McCarthy pushes to end pandemic emergencies immediately after Biden says he won’t do so until May.

Published:

The recent announcement from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that he plans to put forth a bill this week to bring an immediate end to the COVID emergency and return 47 percent of federal employees back to work is a welcomed and necessary decision.

It has been almost a year since the onset of the pandemic, yet the economic struggles for millions of Americans are still quite real. This bill could provide much needed relief by getting people back to work and helping our economy rebound. It would also save taxpayers money by allowing government offices to run at full efficiency.

At the same time, it is important to recognize that this decision is part of broader Republican efforts towards fiscal responsibility as negotiations with President Biden continue over spending cuts and debt limit increases. In comparison to Democrat policies, Republicans are focused on ensuring that any proposed legislation is responsible, realistic and in line with our budget targets.

Finally, we must take into account McCarthy’s recent decision to remove Representatives Adam Schiff, Eric Swalwell and Ilhan Omar from their committee assignments on Intel due to security clearance issues or past statements made against America’s military forces or 9/11 attacks. These individuals have shown clear signs of disregard for law and order, demonstrating contempt for our country’s values and principles. The removal of these representatives from their positions serves as a reminder not only about what kind of example we need leadership in America today but also sends a strong signal that there will be consequences for those who act against our nation’s interests both at home and abroad.

As Congress moves forward with McCarthy’s bill this week, we can take comfort in knowing that our country is being led by leaders who are dedicated not only to relieving the suffering caused by the pandemic but also committed to protecting our democracy through upholding its founding principles and safeguarding it against those who would wish it harm. This is an essential step towards restoring confidence in America’s government institutions as well as setting a positive example for future generations.
